We have a ton of board games at our house.  They get played on occasion, but the real winners of my boys’ attention, are dominoes and playing cards.  The kids love to play all sorts of card and domino games, and it makes me happy that they are working on their math skills while having fun.

Sometimes, they even sneak in a little science – learning about kinetic energy and momentum, using dominoes the only way that I knew how when I was a kid – setting them up and knocking them down…

When we’re in the mood for a more structured activity, this simple domino addition game is always a sure bet.

What you need:

Using a marker, trace several domino shapes onto the paper.  Add addition equations to each traced domino.

Have the child read each equation, and find the domino that shows the correct amount for each. (Example: If the equation is 5+4, the correct domino would have 5 dots on one half and 4 dots on the other half)…

domino 3

When they find the matching domino, ask them to solve the equation…

domino 4

Keep going until all the spaces on the paper are filled with the corresponding domino…
