Incorporating simple learning games and activities into daily life doesn’t need to take a lot of time, effort, or money.
Recently, as I was packing up the contents of our art & craft cupboard in preparation for moving, my 3 year old spotted a bag of clothespins, and started using them to pick up different objects around the house.
I realized what a great fine motor activity this was, and decided to make it into a quick counting game for him.
What you need:
- Index cards
- Clothespin
- Pom Poms
- Marker
- Bowl
I started by using a marker to write numbers 1-10 on index cards. I set them on the floor, next to a bowl of pom poms and a clothespin…
Zahir (age 3) was excited to start. He began by using the clothespin to grab a pom pom (such a great way to work on his fine motor development)…
Next, he placed the pom pom on an index card. He counted aloud as he placed each one…
Although the primary focus of this activity was to work on fine motor skills and counting, color identification and one-to-one correspondence were also a part of the learning.
We kept going until all the cards were full of pom poms. Then, he dumped them all back into the bowl to play again later.
